"He’s not responsible for his actions… not in control…" Steve Rogers in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Part 4
#oh god #when did bucky barnes ever have control of his own actions? #the most tragic soldier narrative analogue #fallen into a war; buying into the glamour and heroism and all the lies; he was going to be a hero #instead he was bloodied and dirtied and left for dead by a nation that would never have even known his name #and then steve brought him back; steven who embodied and did what america should have been for bucky the soldier #and so bucky followed him back into the war #and when he fell (when he lost steve) that’s when he lost all control again #this time all the way to the bottom; all the way to winter soldier #the long dark shadow that america’s militarism casts (or any militarism) #that the enemy will take willing soldiers; willing bodies; and turn them into weapons #because a nation at peace has no use for living weapons #only dead mythical ones #so the live ones get turned against you #and themselves #bucky wreaking chaos in the form of winter soldier #all the violence he does; is violence upon himself; his own body and mind; with every act of violence he does #because it’s not within his control #but it’s also what he was made; he can’t help what he does #he’s a ghost a poltergeist wrecking the house that made him #and it’ll take steve #(who is home; what america should have been) #to bring him back from the cold of the war he fell into #and could never climb back out of #like so many other soldiers throughout all history
